JAKARTA – The airport operators in the Center and Eastern Region of Indonesia, Angkasa Pura Airports -a state-owned enterprise-, is now building a new airport in Yogyakarta, located in Kulon Progo Regency. The new airport will replace Adisutjipto Airport as a civilian commercial airport. The estimated investment cost to build this airport is Rp 6 trillion.  This new airport will be equipped with train transportation facilities such as the Kuala Namu Airport in North Sumatera.

“We will build a new airport in Yogyakarta. We will build it in a form as a city, however it will not just become a city but an airport city, in which the airport will be the nucleus or the core. Eventually, the surrounding infrastructures will thrive because there will be intermodal transportation as well as train transportation. This is what we would like to achieve,” stated the President Director of Angkasa Pura Airports Tommy Soetomo. According to him, this new airport is planned to be in operation by 2016.

The new airport also will support the Yogyakarta Province as a tourism destination for domestic tourists and foreign tourists. In expanding this new airport, Angkasa Pura Airports is cooperating with a foreign partner. The Angkasa Pura Airports shall collaborate with GVK, a private Indian company and airport operator from India which has successfully managed airports in Mumbai and Bangalore.
