JAKARTA – After successfully building a toll road crossing the sea, Indonesia is building the first airport above the waters in Semarang. The cost for this project is Rp 1.5 trillion which is to be constructed by Angkasa Pura Airports of Ahmad Yani Airport in Semarang, Central Java. This airport adopts the eco airport concept which is environmentally friendly as it is built on swamp lands and above waters with minimum impact to the environment.

The Corporate Secretary of Angkasa Pura Airports, Farid Indra Nugraha said that 90% of the construction for the expansion of the new airport terminal for Ahmad Yani Airport shall be on swamp lands, which will be different from the airport construction in Bali or Surabaya. In the initial plan, the investment for the new terminal of Ahmad Yani Airport amounted to Rp 1.1 trillion. However, due to the fluctuation of the rupiah exchange rate against the US dollar, the investment cost has increased to Rp 1.5 trillion, while the construction will take two years to complete the project.

"The investment -that was initially Rp 1.1 trillion- had to be adjusted due to the increase in the US dollar exchange rate," said Farid. The new terminal will have a capacity to serve 5 million passengers per year. The current capacity of the terminal is 800,000 passengers, while in fact the total number of passengers that come and go through Ahmad Yani airport has reached 3.5 million per year.
