YOGYAKARTA - The construction of Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) in Kulon Progo is nearly complete. As of December 8, the construction progress of the airport had reached 90 percent. At present, the construction focuses on the interior of passenger terminal and overpass connecting the departure area on the third floor.

As the manager of YIA, Angkasa Pura Airports is targeting the airport to be fully operational in March 2020 and transfer all domestic and international flights from Adisutjipto International Airport to YIA.

Currently, YIA has served 13 routes for domestic flights, namely Denpasar, Cengkareng, Halim Perdanakusumah, Banjarmasin, Palembang, Palangka Raya, Samarinda, Makassar, Medan, Tarakan, Balikpapan, Batam, and Pontianak. The routes are served by Lion Air, Garuda Indonesia, Citilink, and Batik Air.

"The transfer of all domestic and international routes from Adisutjipto Airport to YIA is targeted to be carried out at the end of March 2020," said Angkasa Pura Airports president director Faik Fahmi.

"The process will involve many stakeholders, so that the flight transfer also depends on the readiness of each airline.”

YIA is one of the National Strategic Projects (PSN) which was mandated by the Government of the Republic of Indonesia to Angkasa Pura Airports. The development of YIA is deemed necessary considering the existing Adisutjipto International Airport lacks of capacity.

After the first phase of construction is completed in early 2020, YIA will have a three-story passenger terminal covering an area of 219,000 square meters with a capacity of 20 million passengers per year. The airport has a runway of 3,250 x 45 meters with a runway shoulder of 15 meters on each side. The specification of the runway is capable to be landed by wide-body aircraft such as Boeing 777-300 and Airbus A380. As for the Aircraft Accident and Fire Rescue (PKP-PK) facility at YIA, it falls into Category 8.

The airport is equipped with five fixed bridge and apron in an area of 371,205 square meters with a capacity of 22 parking stands. The YIA cargo terminal is of 12,000 square meters with a capacity of 40,300 tons per year. The three-story parking building is in an area of 137,280 square meters that can accommodate thousands of vehicles, which complement the facilities at YIA.

Inside the passenger terminal, there are 12 check-in counters, two x-rays, two walk through metal detectors (WTMD), 400 waiting chairs, six immigration counters, and two baggage conveyors.

Other standard airport service facilities available are signage, information counters, flight information display systems, announcements, transportation information, tourism information centers, and customer service staff who are residents of Kulon Progo. There are also lounges, toilets, elevator and drop zones for people with disability, nursery rooms, kid zones, reading corners, and 400 units of trolleys.

Various supporting facilities are also available, such as flight navigation services, meteorological services, aircraft refuelling services, port health facilities, fish, animal and plant quarantine as well as modes of transportation (Damri buses, shuttle buses, trains, and taxi).
