JAKARTA - The Governor of DI Yogyakarta Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X and his officials of Deliberation of Regional Leadership (Muspida) of DI Yogyakarta has a official visit to the Center of Angkasa Pura Airports, Kemayoran, Jakarta on Friday (04/04). This visit discusess the development of New Airport Project in Yogyakarta, precisely in Kulon Progo. The arrival of Sri Sultan was greeted by the President Director of Angkasa Pura Airports Tommy Soetomo and the board of directors of Angkasa Pura Airports. This event was also attended by the Director of Airport of The Ministry of Transportation of Republic of Indonesia, Bambang Tjahyono.

“The problem of project location determination of Yogyakarta New Airport had final. The airport location do no need to step back and no need to bypass the Bogowonto River,”. He explained. According to Sultan, no more problems prohibitted the construction of Kulon Progo Airports. PT Jogja Magasa Iron (JMI), as the initiator of iron sand mining and processing stated his readiness to reverse the location of his plant. Besides, JMI also prepares new inovation that is possible his plany to be build in a small area. Thus, the chimney and particle, as the residue of production, can be minimized and it will not disturb airport operational activities. “After being calculated, the reverse of JMI plant location has possible the clear and save area for airport operational. The lenght of runway has reached the target of 3.600 meters. Thus, Angkasa Pura Airport do not need to step bacj the location until 500 meters to the west. The construction of navigation lamps that shall pass Bogowonto River will no longer be done,” Sultan added.

The Limit of Adisucipto Airport

Today, the land side and air side capacity of Adisutjipto Airport cannot accomodate the existing traffic. Adisutjipto Airport currently can only accomodate 1,2 passangers per year. Based on traffic data in 2013, Adisutjipto Airport has serve 64,9 million airplane movement, 5,7 million passangers and 14,5 million kilogram of cargo. Those indicate that Adisutjipto Airport has over capacity.

As one of most densest airport in Indonesia, Adisutjipto Airport has several limits. The airport runway of 2.200 meters cannot be extended due to several hindrances. In the west, the runway extension is hindered by Janti Bridge and river while in the east is by Boko Mountain. Besides, the airport location is not possible to be developed as airport city.

By the presence of Yogyakarta New Airport that is planned to be constructed in Temon area, Kulon Progo, will overcome the problems of this Yogyakarta people’s proudly airport. The selection of Temon as an airporrt location is based on several consideration, such as geometry and the land availability, topography, far location from volcanic mountain, and minimum local people relocation. This new airport will replace Adisutjipto Airport and be expected to become the main airport to support the development of tourism, trade, investment and opening a new work opportunity for the Province of DI Yogyakarta and the surroundings.
