KULON PROGO - The development of Yogyakarta International Airport(YIA) in Kulon Progo is the fastest airport development project in Indonesia with the best quality construction and design. That was stated by President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko Widodo on a working visit to YIA on Thursday (29/8).

YIA construction began in September 2018 and will be 100 percent complete in December 2019, bringing the total construction period to 17 months. The development of YIA is the fastest one in Indonesia.

"This is the fastest airport construction in Indonesia, maybe even in the world. Very fast. The full capacity Boeing 777 can land here because the runway quality is very good,"  said President Joko Widodo when visiting the construction of the 3rd floor of the YIA Departure Terminal on Thursday (8/29) at 10:00 local time.

Angkasa Pura Airports President Director Faik Fahmi said until the last week of August 2019, YIA's development progress had reached 76 percent and it was certain that construction could be completed in December 2019.

"The construction of YIA can be completed in December 2019 so that the total construction time is only 17 months. This is the fastest airport development project in Indonesia at this scale and in terms of quality, it is also very good," Faik said.

The existence of YIA, Faik added, will increase economic growth through the development of tourism destinations in Central Java and surrounding areas.

"The existence of YIA will make the Special Region of Yogyakarta even more special,"  Faik said.

President Joko Widodo said that a large additional slot will be given to foreign flights so that more foreign tourists will come to Indonesia, especially to Yogyakarta and Central Java.

YIA will also be supported by multimodal accessibility such as toll roads and airport trains that will connect directly to the airport. Currently, several public transportations operating in YIA are Damri bus, shuttle bus Satelqu, airport taxis, online taxis, and trains from the nearest station, Wojo station, which can be reached in 15 minutes from the airport by motor vehicle. More options on transportation mode will make the passengers using airport services feel more comfortable.

During the visit, the President was accompanied by First Lady Iriana Joko Widodo, Coordinating Maritime Affairs Minister Luhut Binsar Panjaitan, Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi, Tourism Minister Arief Yahya, Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung, and Yogyakarta Governor Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X.
