Angkasa Pura Airports Collaborates with ACI to Review Airport Security Level

SEMARANG - Angkasa Pura Airports conducted airport security review at the Jenderal Ahmad Yani International Airport in Semarang, collaborating with Airport Council International (ACI) and other international airports on August 26-29, 2019.

The on-site security review is a series of activities of the Airport Excellence (APEX) in Security program initiated by ACI. Through the program, the international airport organization provides assistance to its members so as to increase the level of airport security and the level of compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.

"To achieve service and operational excellence, including maintaining airport security, Angkasa Pura Airports is making various efforts. One of them is by participating in the APEX in Security program to achieve operational excellence based on national and international regulatory standards,said Angkasa Pura Airports operation director Wendo Asrul Rose.

By participating in the APEX in Security program, Wendo added, airports managed by Angkasa Pura Airports can learn best practices related to airport security from experts in the world's airport industry and increase the level of compliance with applicable standards.

"Airport operators can also learn in planning risk management and mitigation strategies and how to manage airport security from other international airport operators with different operational environments. It also can create quality key performance indicators (KPI) and choose appropriate measurement tools to measure security performance,Wendo said.

The airport security areas reviewed include organization, facilities, human resources, procedures, and quality management. In organization area, condition of the organization, risk management, compliance, and documentation were reviewed. Meanwhile, in the facility area, things that were reviewed are the protection of the perimeter area, terminal design, access point supervision, and inspection of facilities and equipment.

As for human resources, the review includes the selection and recruitment process, background checks on airport security personnel, training, and management of outsourced personnel. In the procedure area, passenger and cabin baggage checks, employee checks, patrols and guards as well as crisis and accident management were reviewed. Then, in the area of quality management, the review includes security culture, internal audit, reporting and monitoring, and continuous improvement.

Angkasa Pura Airports has participated in the APEX in Security program since 2016 by conducting a review on Bali's I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport and Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman Sepinggan International Airport in Balikpapan. Then, in 2017, the review was conducted at Makassars Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport and Juanda International Airport in Surabaya.

In 2018, a follow-up of the results of the review of I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport and SAMS Sepinggan International Airport was conducted. Furthermore, in 2019, a review will be conducted at the Jenderal Ahmad Yani International Airport. This year, Angkasa Pura I plans to collaborate with ACI on the APEX in Security program by holding an Airport Security Committee Meeting at Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) and following up on the results of the initial review of Juanda International Airport and Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport which was done in 2017.
