SEMARANG – First stage of Ahmad Yani Airport expansion has begun following the groundbreaking ceremony on 17 June 2014. Suara Merdeka reports no heavy equipment has been seen in the expansion area. However, some workers in two spots were seen measuring ground depth. Andi Rahmanto, a worker of Hutama Karya said, the first stage covers ground and access works. The process is currently on the phase of ground size and depth measurement. “To find out the depth of earth spikes that will be planted in the ground,” he explained.

Meanwhile the General Affair and Communication Section Head of Angkasa Pura Airports Ahmad Yani Branch, Anom Fitranggono explained that after the completion of first stage, he would move the arrival and departure area to a new location, while the current location would be closed and returned to the Army.

Increasing the Capacity

“We leave out the use of the previous location to the Army. All access in and out of the airport would use the new location. The road will also be changed though PRPP,” he said. He added that the new airport will increase its capacity to 7 million passengers annually, compared to its previous 800,000 passengers. The terminal is currently covers 6,108 square meters. With the upcoming expansion, the terminal will cover 55,000 square meters.  

Ahmad Yani International Airport will be equipped with some facilities, such as 30 check-in counters, three units of aviobridge, four visa-on-arrival counters, five units of elevator, one unit of travelator, and seven units of escalator.
