JAKARTA The passenger traffic at 13 airports managed by Angkasa Pura Airports continues to increase along with the simultaneous development of the company. In the beginning of the 2018 until the third quarter, the traffic increased 9 percent compared to the same period in 2017.

“Angkasa Pura Airports keeps developing the airports to trigger and anticipate the potential growth of passengers every year. It is also aimed to maintain our service to the customers,” said Angkasa Pura Airports president director Faik Fahmi.

As of the third quarter of 2018, passenger traffic in 13 airports of Angkasa Pura Airports increased 9 percent to 73.02 million passengers from 66.9 million in the same period last year. The highest passenger traffic was the I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali which saw growth of 7.86 percent to 17.7 million passengers from 16.4 million last year. The airport contributed around 24.2 percent of total passenger traffic at the airports of Angkasa Pura Airports in the first nine months of 2018.

The second highest traffic in the period was the Juanda International Airport in Surabaya with the number of passengers reached to 15.9 million, accounting for 21.7 percent of the total airport traffic of Angkasa Pura Airports. The number grew 7.12 percent compared to the corresponding period of 14.8 million people. Meanwhile, the third highest traffic was the Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport in Makassar with the total passengers of 10.1 million which accounted for 13.8 percent of the total traffic. The number rose 12.63 percent compared to the same period last year with passengers of only 9 million people.

The highest growth of passenger traffic was the General Ahmad Yani International Airport in Semarang with a growth of 20.86 percent, accounting for 3.89 million people from 3.22 million in the corresponding period last year. The second highest growth was the Frans Kaisiepo International Airport in Biak which amounted to 19.27 percent, accounting for 371,793 passengers from 311,722 passengers in the same period in 2017. Meanwhile, Pattimura International Airport in Ambon saw the third highest passenger growth with a growth of 17.52 percent in the first quarter to the third quarter of 2018 of 1.13 million passengers from 964,545 passengers in the same period last year.

"One of the main factors triggering passenger growth at the General Ahmad Yani International Airport in Semarang as the highest among other Angkasa Pura Airports is the operation of the New Terminal in June. The area is wider and the passenger capacity increases and able to accommodate 6.9 million people per year. Airport capacity building is a major factor in increasing the passenger traffic. Therefore, Angkasa Pura Airports will continue to boost the development our airports," Faik said.

To anticipate and boost traffic growth, Angkasa Pura Airports targets two airport development projects to start operating (minimum operation) in 2019. The projects are the Yogyakarta New International Airport (NYIA) in Yogyakarta which is targeted to be operated in April 2019 and the New Terminal of Syamsudin Noor International Airport in Banjarmasin targeted to be operated in October 2019.
