JAKARTA – To ensure the safety, security, and comfort of the operation of Yogyakarta International Airport in Kulon Progo, which is planned to take place on April 29, 2019, Angkasa Pura Airports will conduct a series of simulations that will be held from April 20 to April 26, 2019.

"The simulations are conducted to ensure the aspects of safety, security, and comfort before the operation of the Yogyakarta International Airport. It has to be done due to the busy air travel around Yogyakarta and Central Java," said Angkasa Pura Airports president director Faik Fahmi.

The simulations will test several aspects, including supporting modes of transportation from and to the airport and the feasibility of the airport’s supporting infrastructure.

It begins with airport security simulation by the Airport Security Committee on April 20, 2019, followed by field operational simulations on April 24, 2019, then airport operation simulation evaluations on April 25, 2019, and joint airport operation simulations with all relevant stakeholders such as land transportation, airlines, immigration officers, and others on April 26, 2019.

Meanwhile, on April 22, 2019 there will also be a hazard identification and risk assessment (HIRA) by airlines and a coordination meeting with stakeholders and table top exercise for airport operations on April 23, 2019.

Furthermore, according to Faik, the demand for flight slot for Adisucipto International Airport in Yogyakarta remains high. With the transfer of international flights from Adisutjipto International Airport to Yogyakarta International Airport, the flight slot request can be accommodated.

"The safety aspect is also guaranteed because the runway length of Yogyakarta International Airport is 3,250 meters longer than the Adisutjipto International Airport runway," Faik added.

Regarding the readiness of supporting transportation, a trial will be conducted on April 24, 2019 during an operational simulation. The supporting transportation includes Damri buses, taxis, trains, and private vehicles. The simulation aims to determine the travel time of aircraft passengers from the departure point in Yogyakarta and outside Yogyakarta to the Yogyakarta International Airport.

On April 26, 2019 the movement of passengers from inside and outside the city will be simulated until the departure process at the departure terminal. In the simulation, the infrastructure and services at the airport will be tested. Simulation participants will do the check-in process, proceed with immigration, enter the departure lounge, pass through aviobridge, and get into the plane. In a joint simulation on April 26, 2019 there will also be an aircraft landing.

At present, the construction progress of the Yogyakarta International Airport for the operation of international flights at the end of April 2019 is almost 100 percent complete. Meanwhile, the overall project progress, which is targeted to be completed by the end of 2019, reaches 47 percent.
