JAKARTA - Angkasa Pura Airports officially changed the name of Ahmad Yani International Airport in Semarang to General Ahmad Yani International Airport. The alteration of the name was based on to the Minister of Transportation Decree No.KP.974 dated June 26, 2018. It was carried out along with the operation of the new terminal at the airport.

“The addition name of the airport, which is the pride of the people of Central Java capital city, is one of Angkasa Pura Airports commitments to commemorate and appreciate the services of heroes, specifically General Ahmad Yani as a revolutionary hero who comes from Central Java,” said Angkasa Pura Airports president director Faik Fahmi.

According to Faik, the process of altering the airport’s name has been deliberated by related parties including with Acting Central Java Governor Heru Sudjatmoko who officially sent a proposal to change the airport on May 18.

“We will assure that the alteration of the airport name is going to be well conveyed to all parties so there will be no mistake in terms of mentioning or in administrative matters in the future,” Faik said.

General Ahmad Yani International Airport was originally called Kalibanteng Airport that was used as an army air base. The Angkasa Pura I has been managing the airport since October 1, 1995 to further improve the service quality as it status changed to civil airport.

On June 7, President Joko Widodo inaugurated the operation of the new terminal at the Ahmad Yani International Airport. The development of the airport which costed Rp 2 trillion in investment aims to overcome the lack of capacity in old terminal.

Earlier, the terminal was only able to accommodate 800,000 passengers per year although it has to serve 4.4 million passengers back in 2017.

With current capacity, it is able to accommodate 6.9 million passengers per year with new apron capable of accommodating 12 aircrafts, 30 check-in counters, 8 escalators, 8 elevators, 3 airbridges which is expected to make customers feel convenient.

With 10 percent growth of passengers each year, it will make the General Ahmad Yani International Airport as a potential business airport.

“The change of the name of General Ahmad Yani International Airport Semarang is also a momentum for Angkasa Pura I to continue improving its service in the city,” Faik added.
