JAKARTA - Angkasa Pura Airports temporarily suspended service on commercial passenger flights at its 15 airports from April 24, 2020 to June 1, 2020. This decision was taken to support the Government of the Republic of Indonesia's regulation on the restriction of Ramadan exodus, locally known as mudik, to prevent the spread of COVID-19. However, airports managed by Angkasa Pura Airports will continue to operate to serve cargo flights or airlines that carry logistics.

The following are excluded from the suspended flights service:

  1. Head of State Institutions of the Republic of Indonesia and guests/state representatives and international organizations’ representatives.
  2. Repatriation flights both for Indonesian and foreign citizens.
  3. Law enforcement operations, public order and emergency services.
  4. Operation of cargo transport (important and essential cargo). Passenger configuration aircraft can be used to transport cargo placed in the passenger cabin specifically for transporting medical, healthcare, and sanitation supplies as well as foods.
  5. Other operations with the permission from a Minister in order to speed up the handling of COVID-19.

"To support the Government in preventing the spread of COVID-19 through the restriction on mudik, Angkasa Pura Airports temporarily suspended services for commercial passenger flights from April 24 to June 1, 2020. We urge people who already bought flight tickets scheduled during that period to contact the airlines to refund or reschedule," said Angkasa Pura Airports vice president corporate secretary Handy Heryudhitiawan.

Airports managed by Angkasa Pura Airports, Handy added, would continue to operate and provide special counters for people who want to refund or reschedule their flights directly to airlines’ ticket counters at the airport. However, the time arrangement to refund the tickets is determined by either flight operators or airlines to avoid overcrowding at the airport.

Therefore, people who want to get a refund via the counters at the airport are advised to contact the airline in advance for appointment to avoid overcrowding.

In addition, they have to observe COVID-19 spread prevention protocol and implement physical distancing as well as wearing mask, driving vehicle with a maximum passengers of 50 percent of its capacity, maintaining a minimum distance of one to two meters from others while at the airport.

"We are also coordinating intensely with airlines to assist those who want to get refund or reschedule the flights of prospective passengers. We are trying to arrange in such a way that the process can still implement the COVID-19 prevention protocol," Handy added.

Besides, Angkasa Pura Airports is also preparing aircraft parking spots at each airport for planes who needs long-term parking in this period so that it does not interfere with the operation of cargo aircrafts that are still operating.

"Hopefully the enactment of the policy of prohibiting mudik and the temporary suspension of services for passenger flights can significantly help preventing the spread of COVID-19," Handy said. [DR]
