JAKARTA - Angkasa Pura Airports recorded passenger traffic growth of 87.6 percent in September 2021 compared to August 2021, from 1,035,527 passenger movements in August 2021 to 1,943,424 passenger movements in September 2021.

Aircraft traffic in September 2021 experienced a significant growth by 44.3 percent, from 16,192 aircraft movements in August 2021 to 23,379 aircraft movements in September 2021. Likewise, cargo traffic grew by 11.4 percent from 31,943,593 kg in August 2021 to 35,589,981 kg in September 2021.

“The growth of air traffic, especially passenger traffic, at 15 Angkasa Pura Airports in September 2021 compared to the previous month was driven by the lowering of PPKM levels from 4 to 3 on the islands of Java, Bali and several other areas where the government relaxed air travel restrictions. Despite the lowering of PPKM levels, the strict health protocols have been implemented according to procedures. In addition, passenger traffic growth has been driven by the reduction of RT-PCR test rates since the end of August and the rapid antigen test rates since early September 2021,” said President Director of  Angkasa Pura Airports, Faik Fahmi.

The highest passenger traffic in August 2021 was at Sultan Hasanuddin Airport in  Makassar of 273,722 passenger movements, while the second highest passenger traffic was at Juanda Airport in Surabaya of 206,833 passenger movements, and the third highest passenger traffic was at Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman (SAMS) Sepinggan Airport in Balikpapan of 114,306 passenger movements. Meanwhile, total air traffic at 15 Angkasa Pura I airports from January to August 2021 was 16,450,928 passenger movements, 204,589 aircraft movements, and 266,363,122 kg of cargo.

The highest passenger traffic in September 2021 was at Sultan Hasanuddin Airport in Makassar of 473,566 passenger movements, while the second highest passenger traffic was at Juanda Airport in Surabaya of 394,473 passenger movements, and the third highest passenger traffic was at I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport in Bali of 235,437 passenger movements. Meanwhile, total air traffic at 15 Angkasa Pura Airports from January to September 2021 was 18,394,352 passenger movements, 227,968 aircraft movements, and 301,953,103 kg of cargo.

In September 2021, Angkasa Pura Airports served an average of 64,780 passengers per day at 15 managed airports. Despite experiencing growth in average daily passengers compared to August 2021 which was only 33,404 passengers per day, the increase was unable to equal the average daily traffic in the period prior to the implementation of PPKM, especially for 18 May - 2 July period, where the average daily passenger traffic reached 119,845 passengers per day.

“Although the air traffic has not been able to equal the air traffic prior to the Emergency PPKM period, the growth in air traffic in September is a positive signal for the gradual recovery of the aviation industry. We also hope that herd immunity will soon be realized along with the massive Covid-19 vaccination program from the Government, so that people may have unrestricted mobility and can travel by air with a sense of security and comfort. Eventually, air traffic will recover and have a positive impact on business performance of business actors in the aviation and tourism sector,” said Faik Fahmi.
