Devy Suradji said the competition was held to get an idea of airport public area design that can provide 'wonderful experience' for airport service users, especially at Adi Soemarmo Airport Surakarta. "This competition is one of a series of activities in order to enliven the 54th Anniversary (HUT) Angkasa Pura I in 2018. This activity is intended to foster the active participation of the community and make the airport as an innovation hub for all children of the nation to create creative and innovative work which has local wisdom content, "Devy added.

The judging criteria for this contest include condition or ambiance that gives the impression of regional ethnicity in the airport, inspirational, and has a philosophy of local wisdom content on interior and exterior, impacts service in giving 'wonderful experience', and has a functional spatial arrangement from airport operational side.

Enthusiasm of Participants

The competition, which started on February 1, 2018 and closed on March 19, 2018 and provided a total prize of 54 million IDR was welcomed positively by the public. "Although the registration time is relatively short, the enthusiasm of participants to participate in this competition is quite good, as evidenced by the 626 participants who register, both individuals and teams. In addition to the big cities in Java, they also come from Medan, Batam, Balikpapan, Makassar , Ternate, and even Jayapura, "said by Des Imron, Chairman of Adi Soemarmo Airport Public Area Design Committee.

Five judges were presented from internl and external circles of Angkasa Pura Airports. They were Ramdan Pradarma, Suwandi, and Andreas Herjuno from Angkasa Pura I, Tony Panca Putra (designer), and Halim HD (Surakarta culturalist).

Ramdan Pradarma, chairman of the jury who was also the Airport Services Group Head Angkasa Pura I, argued that overall the participants managed to showcase outstanding design works. "Extraordinary! The participants did a pretty good research, and the average design is able to give the impression of 'wonderful experience' and has a good story telling,"he said. While Halim HD viewed that in general the participants managed to bring a strong cultural identity in his work.

Through the judging process that run quite tight, the jury finally decided the design entitled "Keraton Terrace" collaboration work from Gilang Dwi Alridho (Yogyakarta) and Litha Fidya Fariza (Bandung) as the best in this competition. UGM Architecture final students and Interior Design ITB were entitled to bring home a cash prize of 25 million IDR. "The winner is beyond expectation! His work is capable of displaying a strong ambiance, beautiful, even able to provide new exposure and atmosphere as well as expand the commercial area,"commented by Ramdan Pradarma.

"This work is made with excellent TOR readings. This design is able to provide innovation and breakthroughs are telling, but still strong with the look of Solo cultural identity. Modern, but its Javanese impression can be. In addition, technically this design is very applicable because it does not change the current 'marwah' terminal building. Planners understand what to maintain and which to take-out,"said by another jury, Tony Panca Putra.

The second winner was "Solo Aeroculture" by Muhammad Imam (Surabaya), Agustian Dwi Habibi (Lamongan), and Muchammad Ubay (Malang). They were rewarded with a cash prize of 17 million IDR. While the third winner who was entitled to the prize of 12 million IDR were Aris Adhi Nugraha, Karlina Wahyuningtyas, Andrew Cokto Putra, and Tyas Nugraheni (Jakarta), with his work entitled "Purwa Madya Wasana".

"A creative process in producing extraordinary works. These three champions represent millennial generations, who can still produce works without distance. I hope the energy of the contestants does not stop here. These designs hopefully can be a breath in the development of Adi Soemarmo Airport, as well as a step to lift not only the airport, but also Solo Raya as a destination,"Devy hoped. [AH]
