Badung - The Supervision and Service Office of the Customs and Excise Office in I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport again succeeded in curbing an attempt  to smuggle 2.522 grams of methamphetamines from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. “The suspect confessed that someone initialed S gave him those illicit goods before he flew from Madura to Bali,” said Chief of Supervision and Service Office of Custom and Excise Office in Ngurah Rai International Airport, I Made Wijaya, on Saturday.

The officer arrested this 84 year old grandfather, with the initial of “ABA” from Sampang, Madura, East Java, right after landing with Malindo Air, OD 306 enroute to Denpasar from Kuala Lumpur at 13.15 Eastern Indonesia Time. This grandfather -who claimed to have been working in Malaysia as a car washer since 1984- carried a suspicious bag as he passed through the X- Ray device. The officers inspecting the bag, found three plastic bags of methamphetamines hidden in the cavity of his backpack.

The officers also found 2 plastic bags in his folded clothes inside his red-purple suitcase. After running several tests, the officers confirmed the 5 plastic bags were methamphetamine drugs or crystals weighing more than 2.5kilograms. Meanwhile from his confession, he admitted that he received the illegal package from a young Malaysian man who also travelled from Madura with the initial “S” who works as a construction worker. Then, Wijaya continued to explain, that these illicit goods were delivered by a man with the initial “I” who also came from the same region.

He further stated that inside the cabin, the suspect was being watched by a man with the initial “R”, who was assumed an accomplice of  “S” and “I”. “However “R” passed the clearance gate thus he was not detained . We suspect that after he escaped, he would certainly tell his network about the arrest of the suspect,” Wijaya added. Meanwhile, the suspect, “ABA” admitted  that he went home to Indonesia because his wife in Sampang was sick. The man who left him with these illicit goods gave him 2000 Ringgit. In the drugs black market it is estimated that, these illicit goods would cost Rp 2 million per gram, so the total value of the methamphetamine is more than Rp 5 billion.

The Customs and Excise Office of Ngurah Rai shall hand over the investigation results along with the case report to the Bali Local Police. The suspect is subject to Article 113 Paragraph 2 Law No. 35 of 2009 on Drugs with a maximum ruling of a death penalty and a fine of maximum Rp 10 billion. Previously on Friday (16/5) the Customs and Excise  Office of Ngurah Rai released news of the arrest of a man with the initial of “INS” from Badung, Bali, who carried a post package containing 715 grams of methamphetamine hidden in a painting from South Africa.
