Anticipating Novel Coronavirus, Angkasa Pura Airports Temporarily Stopped Flight Operation From And To China

JAKARTA - Angkasa Pura Airports temporarily stopped some of its airports’ flight operations that serves flight routes to and from China starting Wednesday, February 5, 2020 (00.00 Western Indonesian Time) to ward off and prevent novel coronavirus from entering Indonesia.

Angkasa Pura Airports that serve routes in and out of China in 2020 are Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai Internationa Airport (scheduled flights), Sam Ratulangi International Airport in Manado (chartered flights), Adi Soemarmo International Airport in Solo (chartered flight).

"In accordance with the President's instruction regarding the temporary suspension of flight operations to and from China starting February 5, several airports managed by Angkasa Pura Airports have temporarily stopped flight operations to and from China, even since the end of January. In this situation, airports managed by Angkasa Pura Airports remain prioritizing hospitality in serving prospective passengers who fly in and out of China, as well as passengers who wish to reschedule their tickets to China,” said Angkasa Pura Airports president director Faik Fahmi.

Faik added that Angkasa Pura Airports also improved coordination and communication with relevant ministries and local government.

There are 158 flights to and from China which are temporarily closed at three airports managed by Angkasa Pura Airports each week. Below is the details of the number of the flights.

I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, Bali

- Number of cancelled flights in a week: 125 flights/week from 22 destinations in China

- Number of airlines with routes to and from China: seven airlines, namely:

1. China Eastern (14 flights/week)

2. China Southern (10 flights/week)

3. Citilink (11 flights/week)

4. Lion Air (29 flights/week)

5. Xiamen Air (14 flights/week)

6. Garuda Indonesia (22 flights/week)

7. Sriwijaya Air (25 flights/week)

Sam Ratulangi International Airport, Manado

- Number of cancelled flights in a week: 28 flights/week from 10 destinations

- Number of airlines with routes to and from China: five airlines, namely:

1. China Southern (three flights/week)

2. Citilink (four flights/week)

3. Lion Air (15 flights/week)

4. Sriwijaya Air (two flights/week)

5. Xiamen Air (four flights/week)

Adi Soemarmo International Airport, Solo

Since January 30, 2020, Adi Soemarmo International Airport in Solo has stopped the operation of once-a-week-chartered flight to and from China (Kunming). On January 29, 174 foreign tourists have returned to China at 06.45 p.m. local time with flights from Solo to Kunming.

Prioritize Hospitality in Serving Passengers

To anticipate the spread of novel coronavirus from aircraft passengers, Angkasa Pura Airports has taken measures without compromising hospitality, namely:

1. Collaborating with Port Health Office at each airport to increase health screening for international passengers through body temperature checks using thermal scanner,

2. Providing an isolated parking stand for aircraft at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in case China picks up its citizens,

3. Providing help desk at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport to serve passengers who want to reschedule their flights,

4. Supporting services for prospective passengers with destination to China from hotel to the airport in collaboration with tourism stakeholders in Bali. It aims to show the hospitality of Balinese tourism stakeholders to the world,

5. In addition, Angkasa Pura Airports is actively participating in disseminating information about the danger of novel coronavirus and its prevention to all passengers at its 14 airports through digital poster display on giant walls in public areas,

6. Angkasa Pura Airports also opened a post to handle coronavirus, one of them is at Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA).

Monitor the Condition of Airport Officers

Apart from providing services that prioritize hospitality for prospective passengers with flights to and from China, Angkasa Pura Airports also monitoring the airport staff to ensure they are in excellent condition.

Following the outbreak of novel coronavirus, Angkasa Pura Airports has provided masks to all airport operational officers with flights in and out of China, especially at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, as an anticipation and prevention measure. Officers are required to use personal protective equipment (PPE) such as goggles, N95 masks, gloves, as well as hand sanitizers. This is the implementation of the meeting decision of the FALNAS Committee (National Air Facilitation Committee) which was held on Wednesday, January 29, at the Ministry of Transportation office, Jakarta.

The number of PPE provided is adjusted to the number of personnel while N95 mask and gloves are 3,000 and 2,000 pairs, respectively. The use of PPE has been implemented since February 4 for an undetermined time.
