BANJARBARU - Angkasa Pura Airports held the 106th Emergency Response (PKD) Exercise at Syamsudin Noor International Airport in Banjarmasin. The exercise aims to train and test the ability and readiness of all personnel when an emergency occurs at the airport.

"The implementation of this PKD exercise is our commitment in providing global airport services in the aspect of safety, security and comfort, especially at Syamsudin Noor International Airport in Banjarmasin," said Angkasa Pura Airports operations director Wendo Asrul Rose.

During the exercise, coordination, communication, command, and synchronization between units and agencies will be improved and examined in accordance with the Airport Emergency Plan Document, the Airport Security Programme Document, as well as the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) that applies at airports.

The PKD exercise consists of three series of simulation, namely Aviation Security Exercise, Domestic Fire Exercise and Aircraft Accident Exercise.

In the Domestic Fire Exercise, a fire simulation is carried out in a passenger bus that is heading to the parking stand area. As for the Airport Security Exercise simulation, the personnel readiness is being tested in handling emergency conditions such as bomb threats or acts of terror.

In the Aircraft Accident Exercise, a Meratus Air Boeing 737-900 ER (PK-MRT) was simulated failed to land and crashed at the southern part of the Syamsudin Noor International Airport’s runway. In this scenario, it is described that there are 192 passengers and eight crews of Meratus Air. As many as 20 passengers died, 20 were seriously injured, 60 were moderately injured and the remaining 100 were slightly injured.

"The simulation in each exercise is designed to depict real conditions in which fatalities, injuries, fires, and all emergency conditions are handled in accordance with the guidelines stated in the Airport Emergency Plan (AEP) and Airport Security Program (ASP),” Wendo said.

In the PKD exercise, post-incident handling is also carried out, for example, handling victims' families through greeters & meeters simulations as well as handling media through simulated media handling.

"Overall, this PKD exercise does not interfere with the operation and service at Syamsudin Noor International Airport," Wendo added.

Apart from regular PKD training, Angkasa Pura Airports always strives to improve safety standards to accomplish the "World Class Airport Company" by periodically evaluating airport safety and security through APEX program in Safety at its six airports and APEX in Security at another five airports by involving Airport Council International and a team of auditors from the management of the best airports in the world.

With such commitment, in 2019 four airports managed by Angkasa Pura Airports namely Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport in Makassar, I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali, Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman Sepinggan International Airport in Balikpapan, and Sam Ratulangi International Airport in Manado received Zero Accident awards from the Ministry of Manpower.
