JAKARTA – Following the suicide bombing at Medan Police headquarters on Wednesday (11/13) morning, Angkasa Pura Airports has took some measures to increase awareness and tighten security in its 14 airports.

"Angkasa Pura Airports tries to maintain the safety of its airports so that operational activities and services for airlines and aircraft passengers remain safe and smooth. For this reason, it is instructed to all Angkasa Pura Airports branch offices increase vigilance and tighten their security by using all security equipment and deploy all available personnel according to applicable SOPs, considering the airport is one of the vital objects in accordance with Law No.1 of 2009 on Aviation,” said Angkasa Pura Airports president director Faik Fahmi.

Various measures to improve security carried out by Angkasa Pura Airports, Faik added, include conducting risk assessments of similar terror threats throughout the airport, increase vigilance in accordance with the results of the risk assessment, and coordinating with security agencies (Indonesian Military/National Police) as member of airport security committee (ASC) in order to update the information about the threat and follow up security measures.

"In addition, tighter pre-screening for more than 10 percent of luggage entering restricted areas are applied, increasing the frequency of random checks of luggage and passengers at checkpoints as well as increasing patrols at the airport perimeter from at least [once] every two hours to be once an hour with random routes and unscheduled time to ensure the perimeter remains safe,” Faik said.

Other efforts are increasing the frequency of walking patrols in airport terminals and ensuring access to security areas is limited and sterile areas are locked when not in use, as well as monitoring CCTV when boarding access is used.

"Until now, operations at the airports of Angkasa Pura Airports are still running normally. If an indication of a threat is found, the airport security unit will immediately coordinate with the relevant security agencies to take some acts to deal with it," Faik added.
